The software is still eating the world, but the agile transformation is a crucial part of the feast.
Back in 2011, Marc Andreessen wrote his famous essay in the Wall Street Journal: “Why Software Is Eating the World”. It turns out that it’s not just software that’s’ eating the world. The software requires a different way of running the organization to be successful. It is firms that are truly agile that are eating the world (whether or not they call themselves by the label "Agile").
Whatever label is used, the successful software firms are all recognizably implementing the substance of Agile - a focus on delivering value for customers, working in small teams in short cycles, and networked organizational arrangements rather than top-down bureaucracy and silos.
Author Steve Denning writes about the topic thoroughly in his new book The Age of Agile. Recommended.
We talked with Rico and Jan, Innovation Facilitator Managers at Roche. They are part of the team that is transforming the swiss affiliate into an agile organization. By giving the example of Roche's swiss affiliate agile transformation journey, both can outline how to start a transformation with more than 160 people.
Many organizations are struggling to apply the concepts of Agile because they view Agile as a new way of doing the same old thing. However, in our experience, leading a large-scale Agile Transformation isn’t about simply adopting a new set of attitudes, processes, and behaviors at the team level—it’s about changing your mindset.
